Imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties
The Forbidden City, at the heart of Beijing, is the largest and best-preserved imperial palace complex in the world. Built in 1420 and home to 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties, its 980 buildings and 8,700 rooms sprawl over 72 hectares of golden-roofed grandeur.
Walking through the Meridian Gate and across the marble courtyards is to walk through 500 years of imperial history. The Hall of Supreme Harmony, the throne hall of the empire, the exquisite Hall of Clocks and Watches, and the emperor's private gardens at the north reveal the rituals of court life.
Today the Forbidden City houses the Palace Museum, with over a million artifacts including jade, porcelain, paintings, and imperial treasures. Advance booking is required, and visiting early in the morning rewards you with the serene atmosphere of an emperor's world.
