How to Pay

Money, mobile payments, and cards in China

China has moved almost entirely to mobile payments. Alipay and WeChat Pay are accepted almost everywhere — from street stalls to high-speed rail stations. International visitors can link their foreign credit or debit cards directly in these apps, or top up using the dedicated travel card options.

The Chinese yuan (CNY) is the only accepted currency. You can exchange cash at airports, major banks, and licensed exchange counters, but you will rarely need much cash — a small amount for emergencies and rural areas is enough.

International credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) are accepted at most hotels, large restaurants, and international chains, but not at smaller shops. Before arriving, set up Alipay or WeChat Pay, link your card, and consider enabling a travel alert with your home bank.
