Traveling respectfully in China
Simple courtesies go a long way. Accept things with both hands, especially business cards and gifts, and avoid pointing at people with your finger. In temples and shrines, dress modestly and avoid touching statues or taking flash photos where prohibited.
Dining etiquette: wait for the host to begin, and never stick chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice — it resembles incense at a funeral. Slurping noodles is perfectly acceptable, even appreciated, as a sign of enjoyment.
Photography: while scenic spots are great for photos, be respectful around locals, and never photograph military or government sites. Learning a few phrases — nǐ hǎo (hello), xièxie (thank you) — is warmly received everywhere you go.
